Nestled within the historic heart of an Italian town, this terrazzo had seen better days, with blown concrete, swollen plaster, and damp spots tarnishing its once-grand allure. Belonging to a beautiful three-storey townhouse, its owner used it only for drying laundry and storing mops, buckets and flower pots.

But fear not, for with a touch of creativity and craftsmanship, its true beauty and functionality was about to be revealed.

An Italian Terrazzo Makeover: The Brief

As we stepped into the scene, we were met with a sight of neglect. Cracked walls whispered tales of time gone by, while damp patches hinted at battles fought and lost against the elements. The terrazzo’s charm lay buried beneath layers of decay, awaiting its moment to shine once again.

The Terrazzo Restoration Begins

We began the restoration process by carefully removing the swollen and blown plaster, unveiling the raw canvas beneath. Then, with meticulous attention to detail, the area was rendered anew, smoothing away the scars of neglect and preparing the stage for a vibrant transformation.

A Palette of Italian Approval

In houses at the heart of a village or town’s Centro Storico (historic centre), every hue tells a story, and every shade must earn its place. Due to planning laws on restoring historic buildings, the choice of colour was not taken lightly. After consultation with the local commune, a cream hue was selected, a colour steeped in tradition that blended well with neighbouring buildings, and approved to grace the terrazzo’s walls. With each stroke of the brush, the terrazzo embraced its new identity, exuding warmth and elegance in equal measure.

Bringing Life to the Oasis

But a terrazzo is more than just walls; it is a sanctuary for the senses. To truly breathe life into this space, we introduced vibrant foliage and fragrant blooms. Pots adorned with fresh flowers welcomed visitors, while a lemon tree stood as a sentinel of Mediterranean zest. Colourful plants dotted the terrazzo, painting a picture of vitality and joy.

The Italian Oasis Unveiled

And so, the transformation was complete. What was once a neglected corner of the town had blossomed into a haven of Italian charm. The terrazzo beckoned visitors to linger, to savour the flavours of summer and be served delicious Italian cuisine by the homeowner under the warm embrace of the sun. Conversations would now flow here like the gentle breeze, where guests could sit at the seating area we added, way into the night, enjoying la dolce vita in this enchanting oasis.
